Our Member Nor Shares a Message of Compassion and Peace

Nor, one of our members from Somalia, spoke at the third Charter for Compassion Global Youth Conference through a video message, held on 23 and 24 September. Exploring the intersection of compassion and justice, his video message highlighted the potential of Youth Associated with Non-State Armed Groups (YANSAG) to become agents of peace, a central focus of GTY’s work.

Drawing on his experience of joining and later leaving Al-Shabaab, Nor reflected on why revenge and violence cannot offer lasting solutions. “Violence destroys people’s lives and divides communities,” he said.

He also emphasized the importance of understanding the circumstances that lead young people to become involved in armed groups, rather than viewing them solely as threats or perpetrators.

Nor still has hope for the youth, yet there are certain key factors that play a crucial role in turning YANSAG into agents of peace. One of them is providing and allowing room for dialogue and listening to each other’s stories. Although we come from different circumstances, we still share similar experiences, challenges, and lessons, but more importantly, we have the hope and desire for a peaceful future.

Nor also emphasized that through education and peacebuilding initiatives, they can become those who are able to contribute to reconciliation and support others facing similar challenges.

At GTY, we work to advance the rights and empowerment of these young people and support their meaningful empowerment for them to become agents of peace. Nor’s message reflects why this matters: with opportunities and support, young people affected by armed conflict can help build a more peaceful future.
