New Publication: From Northeast Nigeria to Peacebuilding

The Global Taskforce for Youth Combatants (GTY)  is pleased to announce a new publication, “From Northeast Nigeria to Peacebuilding“ by Adamu Usman Garko.

Growing up in Northeastern Nigeria, Adamu experienced the impact of armed conflict firsthand. But besides trauma and suffering, he also witnessed the resilience of communities amidst harsh conditions:

This backdrop did more than influence me, but called me to action. I became a writer, an activist, and eventually a law student not out of distant academic interest, but out of lived necessity. I needed to understand why peace was so fragile, why reintegration efforts often felt incomplete, and whether law could offer something more than punishment. I wanted to believe that justice could mean healing. I still do.

These powerful words are an excerpt of the new publication “From Northeast Nigeria to Peacebuilding“. Adamu shares his story of engaging with deradicalization and rehabilitation programs in Nigeria and how these experiences led him to pursue legal research, policy efforts, as well as grassroots activities to support reintegration efforts for former combatants.
