The Global Taskforce for Youth Combatants (GTY) is pleased to announce a new publication: “My Personal Journey“ by Michael Culbert.
GTY member Michael reflects on his time as a member of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and describes what led him to join the group and how he decided to leave violent activism in his past to become an agent of peace.
“Today, I am an advocate for the peace process, for dialogue and for building a much more democratic and fair society for all in a reunified Ireland.“
Michael is now engaged in non-violent forms of activism and serves as the Director of “Coiste na nlarchimí“, an organization that provides support for former combatants and their families in Northern Ireland.
As Michael writes: “Today, I have come to believe that there is no need to fight for something that can be achieved through the electoral process.“ His story is a powerful reminder of the choices young people, particularly youth engaged in armed conflicts, can make to build a future rooted in peace rather than violence.
