New Publication: Choosing a Different Path – A Voice for Peace from Bajaur, Pakistan

The Global Taskforce for Youth Combatants (GTY) is pleased to announce a new publication: “Choosing a Different Path: A Voice for Peace from Bajaur, Pakistan.”

Abu Aman was born in the mountains in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, where the region has endured decades of insecurity, conflict, and displacement. At an early age he was exposed to stories justifying violence. Through the gradual exposure of extremist ideologies over time, he decided to join a non-state armed group.

During that period, he saw ordinary families and children suffer, and people being forced to flee their homes due to the violence. These experiences made him reflect if violence could truly solve problems.

Through these experiences, Abu Aman has become an agent of peace and now works to support people in vulnerable situations, particularly young people. He believes young people should be actively involved when it comes to decisions within their communities.

Working for peace in a place where fear and violence have become part of everyday life is never easy. Still, despite these challenges, he continues his work with the belief that the future can be different from the past.

“From my own experience, there is something I want to say to young people living in fragile and conflict-affected societies. Your past, and the violent narratives you may have been exposed to, do not have to determine your future.

We can question what we have been taught. And we can choose a different path. For me, that path became the path of peace.”

This is an excerpt from “Choosing a Different Path: A Voice for Peace from Bajaur, Pakistan.” Abu Aman’s story reflects how people can become agents of peace, regardless of the circumstances.
