The Global Taskforce for Youth Combatants (GTY) is pleased to announce a new publication: “My Dream for Change Still Lives On” by Samjhana.
Samjhana grew up in Nepal during a time of deep discrimination, inequality, and social disparities. Believing in the pursuit of justice, she joined the People’s Liberation Army during Nepal’s Maoist “People’s War” (1996–2006) at the age of 16 and later served as a commander.
During the war, she witnessed violence, loss, and repression. Although the 2006 peace process brought an end to the conflict, many former combatants were unable to feel the peace and real change they had long hoped for.
Through her experiences, Samjhana came to believe that sustainable peace must be rooted in justice, freedom, equality, and equal opportunity, and that change is possible without violence. Today, she is involved in community and political activities, runs a small business, works in agriculture, and supports women who continue to suffer physically and psychologically after the conflict.
As a member of the GTY, she hopes to connect with former youth combatants across countries and contribute to the path of peacebuilding together.
“I am still pursuing my dream of change.”
This is an excerpt from “My Dream for Change Still Lives On.” Samjhana’s story reflects the ongoing journey from armed conflict toward sustainable peace and justice.
